Is Your Car Overheating? Here Are 5 Possible Reasons
It is no fun being stranded on a roadside or in the middle of nowhere just because your car got overheated and refused to cooperate. Such an unfortunate situation can be frustrating and difficult. However, if it is happening time and again, you should get to the root cause. Only then, you can prevent your car from overheating.
The following are 5 of the most common reasons of a car overheating.
1. Low coolant level
This is a very basic logic. Coolant is supposed to cool the system but if there isn’t enough of this liquid, the system is bound to get overheated. If you are careful about the top-up of coolant but still it seems to drain way to quickly, you should carry out a detailed inspection about where the coolant is leaking to.
Hose clamps can be leak points. The leak can also happen from the heater core. Such a leak can cause the floorboard to be wet and you would probably be able to smell the coolant too. Any leaks should be taken care of immediately.
2. Clogged radiator
A radiator can be clogged internally or externally. Often leaves and debris get stuck in the radiator’s cooling fins, but it is mostly removable. You can use a brush to do so.
Corrosion can cause the tubes to be clogged. This is what usually happens when a radiator is clogged internally. Hence, if the cooling system isn’t well maintained, the radiator is more likely to fail. So, the former clean as prevention is the best cure.
3. Blown head gasket
If the coolant starts to reach the engine’s combustion chambers, that’s when you know that the head gasket failed. If there is more motor oil than the maximum limit and it has a milkshake appearance, you should know there is a head gasket problem.
Such a problem should be solved immediately otherwise, the car is overheated, and we know the problems that can cause.
4. Fuel delivery
Fuel problems can definitely play their part in the overheating of a car. If the mixture is lean, the combustion chambers can receive unnecessarily excessive heat. Failing sensors can cause rich-running conditions that also contribute in overheating.
Such problems are usually spotted by an engine light or poor performance of the car while it’s being driven.
Make sure you are well aware of the warning signs and you should be active to solve the problem.
5. Stuck thermostat
The thermostat basically prevents the coolant from going through the radiator before it is supposed to, that means before the engine has been warmed up. If a thermostat is stuck, that will result in the engine heating way too quickly and the coolant won’t be allowed to cool it.
To check the thermostat, you can take it out and put in in boiling water. If it pops open, it means it is fine otherwise, get it fixed.
